I am drawn to art that is unconventional, detailed, and full of life. I love exploring unexpected combinations of color, pattern, and form, creating work that surprises and invites curiosity. I gravitate toward the weird, whimsical, and surreal, embracing ideas and visuals that are outside the norm. For me, art is a space where there are no mistakes, only experiments, and every choice tells part of a story. I focus on originality and pushing boundaries because I want my work to feel alive and personal while engaging viewers in a way that makes them pause, think, or feel something new. My process often starts with a small detail or idea that grows into something much larger, mixing cultural references, imagination, and vibrant visual language. Every piece I make is a reflection of my personal journey, my heritage, and my curiosity about the world around me.

My Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that creativity matters more than perfection and that every child is capable of creating meaningful art. I view art education as a process rather than a product, where exploration, experimentation, and personal voice are celebrated. In my classroom, students are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and ask questions in an environment that feels safe and supportive. Inclusivity and accessibility guide my teaching. I intentionally differentiate instruction to support students with a wide range of learning styles, abilities, behaviors, and personalities. Students with disabilities are fully included and supported so they can participate confidently and shine alongside their peers. I also believe strongly in culturally responsive teaching. By incorporating artists, themes, and traditions from diverse cultures especially Latino and Hispanic artists help students see themselves reflected in the art world. Through arts integration, connecting art to writing, music, storytelling, and building, students learn that art exists in many forms and belongs to everyone.

About Me

Hello! I'm Emily Mejia, an Illustrator, Surface Pattern Designer, and Art Educator with a B.F.A. in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. Art has always been at the center of my life, and I bring that same passion into both my creative practice and my classroom.
My work explores the wonderfully strange and unconventional, often inspired by my Hispanic/Latino culture and expressed through vibrant color, pattern, and detailed imagery. As a teacher, I aim to create a space where students feel encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, and discover their own artistic voice.
I believe art is a powerful way to connect personal identity with cultural storytelling. Through both my artwork and my teaching, I strive to celebrate creativity, individuality, and the limitless possibilities of visual expression.
